Rotary Year 2016-2017:  Global Grants - Doing Good in the World

Thanks to generous donors, District 6600 received more than $250,000 to provide support for:

  • Cataract replacement in Costa Rica.
  • School equipment in Mexico.
  • Water wells in Africa.

Cataracts affect lens of the eye causing a cloudiness that becomes progressively opaque resulting in blurred vision. Due to the climate, the population of Costa Rica suffers significant problems with cataracts - both in appearing earlier in life and causing more pronounced vision interference than the average worldwide population.

There is a population of nearly 600 located people in 50 mile radius of Nicoya, Costa Rica, who have been identified by medical processional in need of cataract removal.

Our project focuses on sending a team of professional annually to this area to treat as many as possibile (approximately 100 per visit, during a 7 day visit). The team will also provide training to the local medical providers to improve both post and pre-op care for the patients.
